In this exclusive training, Hamoud Almahmoud, head of ARIJ’s print investigations and ARIJ’s MENA Data and Research Center and Nadia Shiyyab, ARIJ researcher and fact checker, show journalists how to use ARIJ’s Data and Research Desk, to expose dirty money and tax evasion across the region and to engage in cross-border collaborations. In this session Seth Binder from the U.S. based non-governmental organization Security Assistance Monitor will provide an overview of how journalists can access detailed data and information on U.S. military and police aid and arms sales to the Middle East and North Africa to find new stories and enhance existing news stories covering U.S. security cooperation or security issues within their own countries. Through SAM's interactive, comprehensive databases, journalists can see the types of aid and equipment the United States is providing and use that data to investigate whether security institutions in their countries are using the aid as intended and whether the aid is improving security in their countries.

Seth Binder

Seth Binder is the Program Manager and Research Associate at the Center for International Policy's Security Assistance Monitor program and covers the Middle East and North Africa. He is the author of several articles and has been quoted in numerous publications on U.S. security policy the MENA region and is the co-author of “The Moroccan Spring and King Mohammed VI’s Economic Policy Agenda: Evaluating the First Dozen Years,” a chapter in The Birth of the Arab Citizen and the Changing of the Middle East. Seth received his Master of Arts in International Relations from Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and received an Advanced Certificate in Middle Eastern Studies.
